June 12, (THEWILL) – Rodri, the talented midfielder from Manchester City, has been crowned the Player of the Season for the UEFA Champions League by UEFA.
The 26-year-old Spaniard, who had an outstanding 2022/2023 campaign, played a pivotal role in City’s triumph as they lifted the prestigious trophy for the first time. His decisive goal secured a 1-0 victory against Inter Milan in the final held on Saturday. Rodri’s exceptional performances throughout the tournament, which included two goals, earned him the coveted Player of the Match award in the final.
In addition to Rodri’s achievement, the Champions League’s Young Player of the Season accolade went to Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, the 22-year-old talent from Napoli. Kvaratskhelia had an incredible season, playing a vital part in Napoli’s league title victory. Moreover, he was honoured with Serie A’s Player of the Season award earlier this month, adding another remarkable achievement to his name.
The Champions League’s Team of the Season featured some of the finest talents in European football. Among them were Thibaut Courtois from Real Madrid, who excelled in goalkeeping duties, and a strong defensive lineup comprising Kyle Walker and Ruben Dias from Manchester City, alongside Alessandro Bastoni and Federico Dimarco from Inter.
The midfield category was dominated by City players, including John Stones, Kevin De Bruyne, and the star of the season, Rodri. The attacking trio consisted of Bernardo Silva and Erling Haaland from Manchester City, alongside Vinicius Junior from Real Madrid.
