February 06, (THEWILL) — James Rodriguez has joined Minnesota United on a short-term contract following his departure from Mexican club, Leon. The Colombian midfielder will remain with the MLS side through June, with the club holding an option to extend until December.
Rodriguez, who has not had a club since Leon chose not to renew his deal at the end of 2025, views the move as an opportunity to improve his chances of featuring at the upcoming World Cup. The 33-year-old made 34 appearances for Leon in 2025, contributing five goals and nine assists across all competitions.
The former Real Madrid playmaker was enthusiastic about his latest transfer. He said: “I’m very happy for this new chapter in my life, I hope to be at my best so I can bring joy to this city and to all the people who are putting their faith in me.”
Minnesota United finished fourth in the Western Conference last season before exiting in the semi-finals of the playoffs. Rodriguez will aim to help the Loons qualify for the post-season once again whilst rebuilding his international prospects.
This marks the sixth club Rodriguez has represented since 2020, following stints at Everton, Al-Rayyan, Olympiacos, Sao Paulo, Rayo Vallecano and Leon. The 2014 World Cup star said he looked forward to meeting Minnesota supporters and promised to give everything on the pitch.
