Morgan Rogers

December 22, (THEWILL) — Morgan Rogers scored twice to lead Aston Villa to a 2-1 victory over Manchester United at Villa Park on Sunday.

The result reduced the gap between Villa and English Premier League leaders Arsenal to three points.

Rogers struck first in the 45th minute with a curling effort after hitting the woodwork earlier in the match.

United had performed well in the opening period, with Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko threatening before the breakthrough.

Cunha equalised three minutes later, finishing calmly after Patrick Dorgu dispossessed Matty Cash.

The England international restored Villa’s advantage 12 minutes into the second half with another composed finish.

Rogers became the first Villa player since Dion Dublin in 1998 to score twice in consecutive EPL fixtures.

United suffered a blow when Bruno Fernandes left the field with an apparent hamstring problem. Cunha wasted an excellent opportunity to level the score when he headed wide from Dorgu’s cross shortly after Rogers’ second goal.

Despite late pressure from the visitors, United could not find another clear chance.

Unai Emery’s side held firm to claim all three points, with United also missing Bryan Mbeumo and Amad Diallo from their attacking options.
