December 03, (THEWILL) — Tottenham Hotspur fought back twice to claim a 2-2 draw against Newcastle United at St James’ Park, with defender, Cristian Romero, grabbing both goals in a thrilling encounter. The Argentine centre-back, returning from suspension, headed home an equaliser before producing an overhead kick deep into stoppage time to deny the hosts all three points.
Newcastle had controlled much of the opening period, with Joelinton hitting the woodwork from close range. The Magpies eventually broke through in the 71st minute when Bruno Guimaraes, introduced at half-time, curled in after Anthony Gordon’s run down the left and Nick Woltemade’s intelligent pass. Romero replied seven minutes later, directing Mohammed Kudus’ cross into the bottom corner with a stooping header.
Gordon restored Newcastle’s advantage from the penalty spot following a VAR review that penalised Rodrigo Bentancur for pulling Dan Burn’s shirt at a corner. The England international converted confidently to put the home side back in front with time running out.
However, Romero had the final say in the fifth minute of added time. Aaron Ramsdale failed to deal properly with Mathys Tel’s delivery from a left-wing corner, and the Tottenham captain connected awkwardly with an acrobatic effort that crept into the far corner. The goal silenced the home supporters and salvaged a point for Spurs, who had suffered consecutive English Premier League losses.
The result ended Tottenham’s losing run while preventing Newcastle from building momentum at home. Both sides had to settle for a share of the points after an absorbing contest that swung back and forth throughout the second period.
