October 23, (THEWILL) –Â Portuguese legend Cristiano Ronaldo has stated that his primary role at Manchester United is to score the goals that can propel the team to victory,
However, the 36-year-old also believes that a period of adaptation was necessary as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer works to bring his new-look squad together and at each person made some sacrifices to play their roles at required.
Ronaldo’s second spell at Old Trafford got off to a flying start, with a brace on his second debut against Newcastle and goals against Young Boys in the Champions League and West Ham in his second Premier League outing.
He then scored the game-winning goal against Villarreal in the Champions League, and he stood up to be counted once more against Atalanta on Wednesday, planting a bullet header into the corner to give United a 3-2 victory after trailing 2-0 at halftime.
Yet, things are not perfect for the Red Devils. As the games and weeks pass, Solskjaer’s position as manager has come under increased scrutiny.
However, Ronaldo knows that the players need time to adapt and acclimate and he believes the club can and will be successful in the end, beyond these lingering issues.
“We are in a moment in my opinion that Manchester do a few changes; they buy me, they buy Varane and Sancho,” Ronaldo said ahead of Sunday’s huge English Premier League clash with rivals Liverpool at Old Trafford.
“The adaptation will take time, even the system of the game that we play, but I think step by step we have to put it in our mind that everything is possible.
“I don’t speak only about my individual stuff, I put the collective in first place. To win things as a collective, it’s more easy to win individual stuff, so I believe that and I still think it’s possible.”
Ronaldo also discussed his role at United, implying that he is responsible for more than just scoring goals, and praised the club’s fans for their continued support, which he described as “fantastic”.
“Everyone should know their role. I know my role in the team, in the club… my role is to score goals, to help the team with my experience and know-how to understand the game.
“If everyone is thinking like that, sacrifice for the team, I think we will be a better team. We have fantastic supporters behind us, fantastic stadium, fantastic team, so we have to carry on like that.”
The Red Devils are currently five points behind EPL leaders Chelsea, having won only four of their first eight games. They have also gone winless in their last three games, losing to Leicester and Aston Villa, as well as drawing 1-1 with Everton.
