January 02, (THEWILL) – Birmingham City have dismissed manager Wayne Rooney, after just two wins in 15 Championship matches. The club has slipped from sixth to 20th under Rooney’s leadership.
Rooney was appointed in October 2023 when Birmingham were in the promotion playoff positions. However, a dreadful run of results, including nine league losses, has left them peering over their shoulders at a potential relegation scrap.
Birmingham’s new owners, the US investors that completed their takeover in July, let go of Rooney’s predecessor John Eustace, in October, wanting more ambition despite Birmingham recording their highest points total since 2016 under him last season.
The former England striker, previously spent 19 months with Derby County but could not prevent their relegation. He also managed DC United for 15 months before leaving without reaching the MLS playoffs.
Birmingham are expected to announce Rooney’s departure imminently, bringing an end to another disastrous managerial spell for the ex-Manchester United icon at St Andrew’s.
