November 01, (THEWILL) – The world champion, Springboks rugby team, is set to embark on a nationwide tour to show off the Webb Ellis Cup trophy they won at the 2023 Rugby World Cup in France. The tour kicks off in Pretoria on Thursday, November 2, with an open-top bus parade through the city. Thousands of fans are expected to line the streets to celebrate the team’s fourth World Cup title.
After the Pretoria parade, the Springboks will head to Johannesburg in the afternoon for a tour through the city centre and Soweto township. Massive crowds are anticipated, especially at the team’s stop at FNB Stadium. On Friday, the tour shifts to Cape Town where fans will pack the Grand Parade to greet the champions. The parade route will also pass through Langa and Bonteheuwel townships.
On Saturday, November 4th, the Springboks take the Webb Ellis Cup to Durban and locations along the KwaZulu-Natal coast. The final leg of the nationwide tour wraps up on Sunday in East London in the Eastern Cape province, the heartland of Black rugby in South Africa. The trophy tour allows fans from across the racially diverse country to celebrate the team’s inspirational World Cup victory together.
According to SA Rugby CEO, Jurie Roux, the trophy tour aims to unite South Africans of every background behind the Springboks. Roux said the team’s victory shows what can be achieved when South Africans come together behind a common goal. The tour also aims to promote rugby development in disadvantaged communities.
