March 08, (THEWILL) – In the aftermath of Russia’s military intervention in Ukraine, FIFA is planning to enable foreign players in the country to temporarily suspend their contracts.
Already, all eight of Krasnodar’s international players, including Remy Cabella and Grzegorz Krychowiak, have consented to have their contracts paused to allow them to leave the country and train with other clubs.
Football agents and FIFPro, the worldwide representative organisation for 65,000 professional footballers, petitioned FIFA to enable players to quit their contracts with Russian clubs, but FIFA has refused and instead agreed to have these contracts suspended.
Foreign players will be allowed to leave their Russian clubs soon, but only for a limited time, since they must return by June 30, the end of the European season.
FIFPro and the World Leagues Forum had written to FIFA, pleading for prompt action in a letter, a part of which read:
“These foreign players may rightfully consider that they are not willing to represent any longer a Russian team and should be able to immediately terminate their contract with their employer without facing any sanction whatsoever from international bodies and to be registered in a new club without being restricted by transfer period regulations.”
FIFA, having already set a precedent by barring Russia from participating in international events, did not want to cause a legal storm by allowing players to terminate their contracts, so they came up with this temporary suspension solution.
