November 13, (THEWILL) – South African authorities have arrested the President of the South African Football Association (SAFA), Danny Jordaan, over allegations that he used the organisation’s resources for personal gain between 2014 and 2018.
According to local media reports, the 73-year-old Jordaan, who was a key figure in bringing the 2010 FIFA World Cup to South Africa, was taken into custody on Wednesday. The allegations stem from a police raid on the SAFA offices in March, where it was claimed that Jordaan had hired a private security company and a public relations firm without the approval of the SAFA board.
Jordaan and two co-accused individuals, SAFA’s Chief Financial Officer, Gronie Hluyo and businessman, Trevor Neethling, are due to appear in court later on Wednesday. In an affidavit submitted to the Johannesburg High Court in a failed attempt to block his arrest, Jordaan has denied any wrongdoing.
It was police spokesperson, Katlego Mogale, who revealed that the allegations against the SAFA President involved the misuse of the organisation’s resources “for his personal gain” during the 2014-2018 period.
The high-profile arrest of the long-serving SAFA President comes as a significant blow to the organisation and South African football. The case is likely to raise questions about governance and financial oversight within the country’s top football body.
