September 20, (THEWILL) – Arsenal made an emphatic return to the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday evening, sweeping aside Dutch champions, PSV Eindhoven, in a 4-0 rout at the Emirates Stadium.
Six years after last featuring in Europe’s premier club competition, the Gunners marked their comeback in style, racing into a commanding 3-0 half-time lead, thanks to goals from Bukayo Saka, Leandro Trossard, and Gabriel Jesus. Mikel Arteta’s men were utterly dominant in the first 45 minutes against an attack-minded, but ultimately blunt PSV outfit. The visitors’ positive approach left plenty of space for Arsenal’s fleet-footed forwards to exploit.
Saka opened the scoring early on with a close-range finish before Trossard doubled the advantage with a well-taken strike. Jesus added a third after a mesmerising run and finish. The second half proved more sedate as Arsenal protected their advantage, but captain, Martin Odegaard, capped a splendid individual display with a stunning long-range drive to make it 4-0.
PSV continued to pose a threat, with the likes of Ismael Saibari impressing, but the damage was already done. For Arsenal, this was a mightily impressive statement of intent in their first Champions League match since 2017.
Mikel Arteta wisely rested key men late on ahead of Sunday’s massive clash with north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur, who have been equally impressive under new manager Ange Postecoglou. Meanwhile, PSV must now regroup before facing Almere on Saturday. The Gunners top Group B after Sevilla and Lens drew 1-1.
