December 12, (THEWILL) – Samuel Eto’o Fils, a former Barcelona and Inter Milan player, has been named next president of the Cameroonian Football Association.
Following a brief stint in Qatar, the 40-year-old former striker declared his retirement from professional football in 2019.
He announced his intention to seek the president of his home football association in 2020, promising to implement financial and organisational improvements if elected. Eto’o has promised to build 10 new stadiums in the country after defeating challenger Seidou Mbombo Njoya, with a fresh focus on securing private investment.
Eto’o’s first assignment will be to oversee Cameroon’s hosting of the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in January 2022. The 40-year-old is a national hero in Cameroon, having scored 56 international goals and being the Indomitable Lions’ second-highest most capped player with 118 caps.
