Saudi Arabia Hold Uruguay To A Draw
Saudi Arabia goalkeeper Mohammed Al-Owais makes one of his nine saves during the 1-1 FIFA World Cup Group H draw against Uruguay at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.

June 16, (THEWILL) — Saudi Arabia produced another impressive FIFA World Cup performance as they held Uruguay to a 1-1 draw in their Group H encounter at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.

The Green Falcons looked on course for a famous victory after taking the lead late in the first half, but Uruguay fought back after the break to secure a share of the points through Maxi Araújo.

Both teams started with attacking intent, deploying similar 4-4-2 formations. Uruguay relied on the striking partnership of Darwin Núñez and Federico Viñas, while Saudi Arabia looked to Feras Al-Brikan and Musab Al-Juwayr for inspiration in attack.

The breakthrough came in the 41st minute when defender Abdulelah Al-Amri rose highest from a corner kick and directed the ball into the net, sending the Saudi supporters into celebration.

Uruguay almost responded immediately before halftime, but Saudi goalkeeper Mohammed Al-Owais produced a brilliant save to deny Viñas’ powerful header. Núñez also came close moments later, heading narrowly wide as the South Americans searched for an equaliser.

Uruguay increased the pressure after the restart and nearly levelled within seconds when Viñas met a cross with a diving header, only for Al-Owais to make another outstanding save.

The Saudi goalkeeper continued to frustrate Uruguay’s attackers as Manuel Ugarte, Agustín Canobbio and Federico Valverde all tested the defence without success.

Uruguay’s persistence was eventually rewarded when Maxi Araújo found the breakthrough to restore parity and prevent Saudi Arabia from claiming all three points.

Al-Owais remained the standout performer, finishing the match with nine saves as Saudi Arabia earned a valuable point against one of South America’s traditional football powers.

The result leaves both teams with one point apiece in Group H as they prepare for their next World Cup assignments.
