August 06, (THEWILL) – On Sunday, the Saudi sovereign wealth fund unveiled a new sports investment company called SRJ Sports Investments, with the aim of attracting “major global events” to the kingdom.
As part of the Vision 2030 reform agenda led by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the Public Investment Fund (PIF) seeks to bolster Saudi Arabia’s stature as a world-renowned sports and entertainment destination. SRJ Sports Investments will focus on acquiring and creating intellectual property for sports events, obtaining commercial rights for popular competitions, and hosting significant global sporting events within the nation.
With assets under management totalling 2.23 trillion Saudi riyals ($595 billion) in 2022, the PIF’s foray into sports comes amid its efforts to rebrand the oil-rich kingdom as a global hub for business and tourism. Saudi Arabia’s ambitious sports-focused approach has already resulted in high-profile signings of football stars, such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema, Jordan Henderson, and Sadio Mane, further elevating the country’s sporting profile.
Notably, the kingdom’s involvement in golf with the financing of the rebel LIV series and hosting a Formula One Grand Prix has caused waves in the sports world. The ATP and the WTA, governing bodies of men’s and women’s professional tennis tours, have also been targeted by Saudi Arabia, with the country hosting exhibitions for top male players outside Riyadh in 2022. However, amidst the flurry of deals and negotiations, the nation has faced criticism and allegations of “sportswashing,” raising concerns about the potential use of sports to divert attention from the country’s human rights record.
As SRJ Sports Investments takes centre stage, Saudi Arabia aims to solidify its position as a global sports and entertainment destination, actively engaging in strategic sports partnerships and events. With its vast sovereign wealth and growing investment in sports intellectual property, the kingdom seeks to project an alluring image to the world, emphasising its sports infrastructure, technology, and fan engagement initiatives. However, questions surrounding the ethical implications of its sports strategy remain, as critics argue that the nation’s human rights record should not be overshadowed by its sporting pursuits.
