March 24, (THEWILL) – Greece achieved promotion to League A of the UEFA Nations League for the first time following a commanding 3-0 victory against Scotland at Hampden Park. The win overturned their one-goal deficit from the first leg in Piraeus and relegated the Scottish side to League B.
Giannis Konstantelias opened the scoring for the visitors in the 20th minute against the run of play, finishing a cutback from Georgios Vagiannidis after Scotland lost possession from a goal kick. The Greeks doubled their advantage just before half-time when 17-year-old Konstantinos Karetsas curled home a sublime finish after being set up by Konstantelias.
The third goal came immediately after the restart when Christos Tzolis capitalised on poor defending to slot past Craig Gordon, effectively ending Scottish hopes of a comeback. Scotland showed early promise with Scott McTominay forcing a save from Konstantinos Tzolakis, but ultimately struggled to breach the Greek defence. The visitors maintained their impressive defensive record, keeping their sixth clean sheet in nine matches during the competition.
Greece will now look forward to summer friendlies against Slovakia and Bulgaria with renewed confidence, while Steve Clarke’s Scotland must regroup following this disappointing relegation.
