Farm inputs

July 15, (THEWILL) — The Senator representing Ebonyi Central Senatorial District and the Senate Committee Chairman on Information and National Orientation, Engineer Kenneth Eze, has distributed various agricultural inputs to farmers in Ezza North, Ezza South, Ikwo and Ishielu Local Government Areas to boost food sufficiency in the area.

Speaking to journalists in an interview shortly after the flag-off of the distribution at Onueke, Engr. Kenneth Eze disclosed that the farm inputs distributed include: 1,000 cartons of insecticide, 1,000 cartons of herbicides, 4,000 bags of fertiliser, 1,000 cartons of liquid fertiliser, 1,000 disac sprayers, high-yielding rice seedlings, amongst others.

He further explained that similar interventions by the government for farmers in previous years had improved farm produce and led to a reduction in the prices of food in the market.

The federal lawmaker said the agricultural intervention was to support the federal government’s Renewed Hope Agenda. “This is one of the events we have mapped out to support the federal government under the Renewed Hope project on agriculture.

“You will agree with me that we have food insecurity in the country, and that prompted Mr President to embark on an aggressive agricultural revolution that we have, as senators, stepped down to our various constituencies. And equally in the support of the state government under Governor Francis Nwifuru.

He stated that due to food scarcity and hunger, there was a need to encourage people to return to the farm.

“You will agree with me that there is food insecurity, people are hungry, and we are trying to encourage people to go to the farm because as many as those who go to the farm will have enough food to feed the masses. The state government just flagged off its own agricultural farming season inputs to facilitate the farmers’ needs to go to the farm.

“And that is what we have decided to do today in my own constituency as the senator representing Ebonyi Central senatorial zone to ensure that I encourage my constituents to go to farm and to aid them because most of them may not be able to afford the fertilizer, some will not be able to afford the rice, the certified rice that we are sharing, that’s seedling.

He added that prior to government intervention, there was acute scarcity of food in the market, “Certainly you can testify that the prices of food in the market are reducing, unlike what we had before.

“There was absolute food scarcity in the market, so even if you went to the market, you wouldn’t see food to buy. But with the effort of the government, there’s a lot of improvement in the farm produce.

You can see that the poor masses can have little to take to the farm, but our intervention will help in the yield they will get, because when you apply fertiliser, you will find out that you get a better yield.

“We have witnessed more food in the market today. People can feed better, and we can see food in the market now. Prices of foods are going down”, he attested.

In their separate speeches of appreciation on behalf of the stakeholders and other dignitaries, the Former Member of the House of Representatives, Hon Lazarus Ogbe and the Ebonyi state APC Deputy Chairman, Hon Alphonsus Chinedu Nwali commended Senator Eze for his outstanding five star performance and the effective representation he has continued to bequeath the people of Ebonyi Central Senatorial District since his assumption of office.
