April 01, (THEWILL) – The FIFA World Cup draw has served up interesting matchups for the group stages set for the first ever global football fiesta in the Arab World. In this first Winter world cup in Qatar later this year, Nigeria will be conspicuously missing, but there is enough football to keep every football fan excited.
The pairing of the United States and Iran will make headlines for reasons other than football, because to political issues between the two countries, including sanctions. But, so will the fixture between the US and England given their antecedents.
In terms of football, the African contingent will face some tough opposition. Leading African team and current continental champions Senegal will be optimistic about their chances in Group A against hosts Qatar and Ecuador but will have to be wary of the Netherlands.
Morocco might be tempted to relax but Belgium and Canada are tough competition just as Croatia and they may need to buckle up. Ghana will have opponents in Group H such as old foe Uruguay, with memories of Luis Suarez, South Korea, and Portugal, where Ronaldo will be trying one last time for the elusive trophy.
Cameroon has been drawn in a difficult group with Serbia, Brazil, and Switzerland. Brazil defeated Cameroon 4-1 the last time they met in 2014 and may be relishing another matchup.
Tunisia will face certain difficulties in their group especially from defending champions France.
