March 25, (THEWILL) – The Teranga Lions of Senegal inched closer to securing a spot in the next Africa Cup of Nations tournament after a dominant performance against Mozambique on Friday.

Senegal emerged victorious with a 5-1 win at the Diamniadio Olympic Stadium in Dakar, making it three wins from three in Group L. They need just one more win, in their upcoming match against Mozambique, to qualify for AFCON in Ivory Coast next year.

The Teranga Lions took an early lead with Youssouf Sabaly’s ninth-minute strike, followed by Sadio Mane’s goal in the 15th minute. Iliman Ndiaye and Boulaye Dia also scored for Senegal in the first half, with Habib Diallo securing their fifth goal in the 89th minute.

Mozambique’s Lourenco Vilanculos pulled one back early in the second half, but the visitors failed to muster any further momentum against Senegal’s dominant performance. The two teams will meet again in their return Group L match at the Estadio do Zimpeto in Maputo on Tuesday, March 28.

Senegal is currently the top-ranked African football team in the FIFA world rankings and the current reigning champions of the continent and that depth of quality was obvious throughout Friday’s game.
