May 11, (THEWILL) – Senegal’s captain, Amara Diouf, has broken Nigerian Victor Osimhen’s scoring record at the TotalEnergies Under-17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Diouf’s impressive brace against South Africa in the quarter-finals in Algiers on Wednesday evening took his tally to five goals in the tournament, surpassing Osimhen’s record of four goals set in the 2015 tournament in Niger. With two more games left to play, the Senegalese number 10 is thrilled to follow in the footsteps of the highly successful Osimhen.
In expressing his delight, Diouf emphasised the significance of learning from the best players in the competition. He stated: “It is always the right path if you follow the examples set by the best players in the competition. This is a massive thing for me, and I am really delighted to break the record. It means a lot to me, and hopefully, I can also follow his path of success.”
Diouf, a talented player from the Generation Foot Academy, was awarded the Man of the Match for the third time in Senegal’s four matches at the tournament. His impressive performance included a brace in the 5-0 victory against the Amajimbos, contributing to the team’s overall success.
Reflecting on the achievement, Diouf expressed his gratitude, saying: “I am hugely honored to be named Man of the Match, and more so for Senegal to win the game and qualify for the World Cup. It is a big achievement for us as players and it motivates us moving forward.”
