Jorge Sampaoli

March 21, (THEWILL) – Sevilla have announced the sacking of Jorge Sampaoli, following a string of poor performances that have left them perilously close to the relegation zone in La Liga.

Sampaoli’s second spell in charge has been cut short, with the club’s hierarchy opting to make a change after a disappointing run of form that has seen the team win just twice in their last seven league games.

The final straw came with Sunday’s 2-0 defeat to Getafe, a result that has left Sevilla in a precarious position in the league. The club’s statement confirmed that the decision was made in the hope of a reaction from the team in the final 12 games of the season.

Sevilla are now on the lookout for a new coach and have been linked with Jose Luis Mendilibar. The club has said they plan to appoint someone later today, with the new coach set to take charge of an early-evening training session. Sampaoli did lead Sevilla into the quarter-finals of the Europa League, but it will be a different coach in the dugout when they face Manchester United.
