July 19, (THEWILL) – With their player exodus following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Shakhtar Donetsk has filed a claim with FIFA for €50 million (£43 million) in damages for missed transfer fees.
This is because FIFA allowed international players to suspend their contracts and look for new clubs in other nations after the Russian invasion of Ukraine caused a conflict in local football within both countries.
Sergei Palkin, the chief executive of Shakhtar, claimed that brokers were taking advantage of the situation and paying for deals on behalf of themselves rather than the Ukrainian Premier League club.
After FIFA’s decision on June 21, foreign players had the chance to unilaterally suspend contracts after June 30. This gave Shakhtar and other Ukrainian clubs time to complete sales. This allegedly led to several players stopping their on-going transfers and ended to leaning for free. According to the club, Manor Solomon and Tete were two of such players.
Currently, the club has filed an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) seeking compensation for their losses.The team is in the Netherlands as they continue to train abroad pending the anticipated August return of football in Russia.
