SAN FRANCISCO, August 06, (THEWILL) – Best graduating students of Borno State origin at the Nigerian Law School are to be sponsored abroad to study Petroleum Law.
The state governor, Kashim Shettima, gave the promise Wednesday at the State Government House, Maiduguri, during the presentation of N300, 000 and a laptop each to 85 Law School students from the state.
Shettima also directed the review of the scholarship award for students of Borno State origin at the Law School from N300, 000 to N500,000 and 400,000 for female and male students respectively.
He also directed the Executive Secretary of the State Scholarship Board to immediately process the payment of the remaining balance.
“I am offering N500,000 to female students to encourage them to study law, as there is a saying that if you educate woman, you educate a nation but when you educate a man you educate an individual, hence the need to encourage our women folk to be educated,”Shettima said.
The governor said investment in education is government’s priority as Boko Haram insurgency was borne out of ignorance, illiteracy and joblessness. Shettima said he was a product of public school and see no reason his administration should not make public schools conducive for learning and teaching.
Shettima therefore called on the beneficiaries to put in their best and make the state proud by coming out in flying colours.
“I will sponsor best students among you to study in best universities across the world . I call on you to study hard and after your graduation, you come back home and join us in building the state to offer yourselves by teaching in our schools. I will also volunteer to teach in one of the Secondary Schools in the state,” he said.
In his remarks at the occasion, the Supervising Commissioner of Higher Education, Hon. Abba Nguru, commended the governor for approving the payment of the allowances of the state students studying in various law schools across the country.
He said 85 students benefited from the scholarship of N300,000 each and a laptop computers, stressing that the ministry went round the six campuses of the law schools across the country before arriving at the number of the students.
Appreciating the gesture of the government on behalf of the benefiting students, Mustapha Abba Gaji, promised that they would do the state proud by being good ambassadors of the state and dedicating themselves to their studies.
