September 05, (THEWILL) — Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz will contest the US Open men’s singles final on Sunday, marking their third consecutive Grand Slam final meeting this year.
The Italian defeated Félix Auger-Aliassime 6-1 3-6 6-3 6-4 in a physically demanding semi-final, requiring a medical timeout after experiencing stomach twitching during the fourth set.
Sinner maintains the issue will not affect his final performance, though his first-serve percentage remained around 50 per cent throughout the tournament.
Alcaraz progressed with a 6-4 7-6(4) 6-2 victory over Novak Djokovic, achieving his first hard-court win against the Serbian in four attempts.
The Spaniard has averaged fewer than 10 games dropped per match and considers this his second-closest encounter of the tournament.
Between them, Sinner and Alcaraz have eliminated their most significant rival across three straight major tournaments.
The final will determine both the tournament champion and the world number one ranking. Victory for Alcaraz would give him six Grand Slam titles compared to Sinner’s four, whilst also levelling their 2025 major count at two each.
A Sinner triumph would equal Alcaraz’s total of five majors and secure three of the four biggest titles in tennis this year.
Alcaraz holds a 6-1 advantage in their last seven meetings, though both players acknowledge their encounters have become more tactical since their breakthrough five-set match at this venue three years ago.
The Spaniard’s serving has improved significantly, whilst Sinner has enhanced his physical conditioning to maintain peak performance across extended matches.
Both players can still improve tactically. Alcaraz’s occasional strategic missteps need work and Sinner will have to develop greater variety in his net play.
Their repeated meetings will continue to drive mutual improvement, with neither player holding secrets about the other’s game despite the unpredictable nature of their contests.
