Daniil Medvedev

April 02, (THEWILL) – Daniil Medvedev claimed victory at the Miami Open on Sunday, with a straight-set win over Italy’s Jannik Sinner.

The Russian fourth seed secured his fourth title of the year and 19th overall, dominating the match on a hot and humid day at Hard Rock Stadium, in South Florida. Medvedev pumped his fist in celebration after finishing the match with an unreturnable serve.

The win marks Medvedev’s fifth consecutive final, having won tournaments in Doha, Rotterdam, and Dubai before finishing as the runner-up at Indian Wells last month against Carlos Alcaraz. Sinner, who reached the Miami final in 2021, struggled in the sweltering conditions and was visibly affected by the heat.

Although the Italian took an early lead, he was unable to match Medvedev’s powerful groundstrokes and impenetrable defence. The victory improved Medvedev’s lifetime record against Sinner to 6-0 and leaves the 10th seed still searching for his first Masters 1000 title.

With four titles already this year, Medvedev will be confident heading into the clay court season, which begins with the Monte-Carlo Masters next week.
