August 22, (THEWILL) – In Sunday’s nail-biting English Premier League match against Newcastle United, Manchester City rallied from two goals behind to earn a 3-3 draw, thanks to goals from Bernardo Silva and Erling Haaland.
Ilkay Gundogan initially gave the defending champions the lead in the fifth minute at St. James’ Park after they had started their most recent title defence with back-to-back victories without conceding. However, Callum Wilson gave Newcastle, who are still unbeaten, the lead before halftime, and Miguel Almiron tied the score with a goal granted following a VAR review.
Newcastle then opened a lead, thanks to Kieran Trippier’s magnificent free-kick. It was left to Haaland and Silva to salvage the match for City and they quickly evened out the score to ensure that the points were split.
This led to a frantic final quarter-hour during which Trippier was initially given a red card for an unsportsmanlike challenge on De Bruyne before the judgement was changed to a yellow card, but there was to be no winning goal.
Even though City remain unbeaten, they miss the opportunity to tie Arsenal for the lead in points and drop to second instead. They have a charity match against Barcelona coming up on Wednesday. Newcastle’s unbeaten streak continues, and they are now focused on their trip to Tranmere Rovers in the EFL Cup.
