May 28, (THEWILL) – Real Sociedad’s dreams of securing a spot in the UEFA Champions League were initially shattered despite their best efforts against Atletico Madrid on Sunday.

The La Real squad entered the Civitas Metropolitano with the knowledge that a victory would guarantee them a top-four finish in La Liga, a feat they had not achieved since the 2012/2013 season. However, goals from Antoine Griezmann and Nahuel Molina condemned them to a 2-1 defeat.

The match took an unfavourable turn for Real Sociedad when Griezmann unleashed a sensational strike in the first half, propelling Diego Simeone’s already-qualified Atletico into the lead. Skillfully manoeuvring onto his left foot, Griezmann hammered the ball into the far corner, securing his 15th league goal of the season.

As the game progressed, Molina added to the home team’s tally, receiving a clever through ball from Griezmann and delivering a deflected shot that found its way past goalkeeper Alex Remiro. Despite a late resurgence from Real Sociedad, as Alexander Sorloth managed to pull one back with an excellent assist from Brais Mendez, time ran out on their quest for an equaliser.

The defeat marked their first loss in eight league matches. However, there was cause for celebration for the La Real faithful as Villarreal’s 2-1 loss to Rayo Vallecano ensured their team’s qualification for the prestigious UCL tournament next season.
