October 25, (THEWILL) – Under-pressure Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has admitted that the 5-0 loss to Liverpool at Old Trafford was his darkest day as Manchester United manager, but that he had no intentions of resigning.
The Red Devils were humiliated in front of their own fans, finishing the game with ten men after Paul Pogba was dismissed for a reckless and injurious tackle on Liverpool goal-scorer Naby Keita.
The result increased the pressure on Solskjaer, who was backed to make significant summer investments in the playing squad that brought in Cristiano Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho, and Raphael Varane. It was all he could do to concede that it was his darkest day as United coach.
“It’s the darkest day I’ve had dealing with these players,” Solskjaer noted in post-match remarks. “We were not good enough, individually and as a team. The whole performance was not good enough, that’s for sure.
“You can look back to last season and the 6-1 loss to Spurs. This is worse, miles worse. The opposition as well makes it miles worse. We have to get over this as quickly as we can and move on.”
When asked if the team’s overall performance reflected poorly on him and his coaching staff, the Norwegian responded: “It is mine. The coaching staff are brilliant. I choose the way we approach the game and today we were not clinical enough going forward.”
Obviously aware of calls for United to act and relieve the manager of his duties, Solskjaer confirmed that he had no intention of quitting: “I have come too far, we have come too far as a group and we are too close to give up now.”
