August 03, (THEWILL) — Tottenham Hotspur captain Son Heung-min is close to completing a record-breaking transfer to Los Angeles FC, with negotiations between the clubs reaching an advanced stage.
The South Korean forward confirmed his intention to leave Spurs during a press conference in Seoul on Saturday, prompting LAFC to accelerate talks.
Tottenham, who initially demanded £30.1 million from Saudi Arabian suitors, have reportedly reduced their asking price to £20.3 million, with LAFC aiming to finalise a deal closer to £15.1 million.
Should the transfer proceed at the higher valuation, Son would become the most expensive signing in Major League Soccer history, surpassing Atlanta United’s £12.6 million acquisition of Emmanuel Latte Lath.
LAFC have already made significant progress in personal terms with the 33-year-old, who scored 173 goals and provided 101 assists during his 454 appearances for Tottenham.
The move would mark a major coup for the MLS side, who currently sit sixth in the Western Conference.
LAFC officials travelled to South Korea this week to negotiate directly with Son and Tottenham ahead of his expected farewell appearance in a preseason friendly against Newcastle United.
The club’s head coach, Steve Cherundolo, is set to depart at the end of the 2025 season, but Son’s arrival would provide an immediate boost to their attacking options.
His wages are likely to exceed those of LAFC’s current highest earner, Denis Bouanga, who earns £2.8 million annually.
Son’s departure from Tottenham follows a decorated spell in North London, where he lifted the Europa League trophy in 2025, ending the club’s 17-year silverware drought.
His leadership and consistency made him a fan favourite, but with his contract winding down, the Spurs appear willing to facilitate his move rather than risk losing him for free. LAFC’s pursuit aligns with their ambition to compete for MLS Cup honours this season.
The transfer could be finalised before LAFC resume MLS action against Chicago Fire FC on August 9.
If completed, Son’s arrival would signal a statement of intent from the Black and Gold, reinforcing their status as one of the league’s most ambitious clubs.
