December 16, (THEWILL) – Southampton have terminated Russell Martin’s management contract following a catastrophic 5-0 home defeat against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday. The English Premier League’s bottom-placed team confirmed the decision after Martin oversaw just one victory in 16 matches this season.
In an official statement, the club acknowledged the “difficult decision to part ways” with Martin, emphasising the challenging nature of competing in the top-flight football league. The board noted they had maintained transparent communication regarding performance expectations throughout Martin’s tenure.
Simon Rusk, currently leading the club’s Under-21s squad, will assume interim managerial responsibilities until a permanent replacement is identified. Southampton remains nine points from safety, entrenched at the bottom of the League table after their recent relegation and subsequent promotion.
Following the match, Martin candidly addressed his performance, telling TNT Sports: “I was hurt in the first half. We did not respond very well to the setbacks as a group. We have seen that all too often this season. After the first goal, our response was very poor.”
