August 19, (THEWILL) – Che Adams emerged as the hero for Southampton, scoring a dramatic stoppage-time winner to secure a thrilling 2-1 victory over Plymouth in the Championship.
Adams’ decisive goal came in the dying moments of the match when he expertly controlled the ball and volleyed it into the net from close range. The goal was a product of Adam Armstrong’s goal-bound header being parried by Plymouth goalkeeper Conor Hazard, allowing Adams to seize the opportunity and secure the much-needed win for his team.
The match started with Plymouth showing their intent to make an impression against the visitors, who were making their first visit to Home Park since 2011. Finn Azaz of Plymouth had an early chance to trouble Southampton’s defense but failed to convert. Southampton responded with a free-kick from Stuart Armstrong, but Hazard easily gathered the ball. With seven minutes of regulation time left, Joe Aribo replaced Stuart Armstrong, whose dipping strike rattled the crossbar earlier.
The game opened up even more, and both teams had their chances to take the lead but Samuel Edozie’s effort narrowly missed the target. In the end, it was Adams who decided the outcome with his stoppage-time winner, securing a memorable victory for Southampton. On Saturday, Plymouth will host Bournemouth while Southampton take on Queens Park Rangers.
