October 13, (THEWILL) – A diving header from Alvaro Morata and a debut goal for Oihan Sancet gave Spain an important 2-0 victory over Scotland in a Euro 2024 qualifier on Thursday night.
The match saw controversy when Scott McTominay had a brilliant free-kick goal ruled out by VAR for an alleged foul on Spanish keeper Unai Simon. The decision left the Scots furious as they were chasing the points needed to qualify for the tournament in Germany next summer.
The win keeps Group A leaders Scotland on the brink of reaching consecutive European Championships, provided second-placed Spain avoid defeat against Norway on Sunday. The Spanish can also qualify with a win over the Norwegians, who thrashed Cyprus 4-0 on Thursday.
It was Spain’s second match under new manager Luis de la Fuente. After losing 2-0 in Scotland in March, de la Fuente insisted his team were better prepared for the rematch, and so it proved in Seville.
The Spanish dominated possession and chances but faced stubborn Scottish resistance until Morata broke the deadlock with a diving header in the 73rd minute. A goal for Sancet in his first international cap sealed the win late on.
