September 05, (THEWILL) – Spain’s Football Federation (RFEF), has reportedly sacked Jorge Vilda, as coach of its women’s national team amid a scandal caused by the non-consensual kiss of a player by the Federation’s now-suspended President.
A new RFEF board formed after the suspension of President, Luis Rubiales, by FIFA, over the kiss two weeks ago during the team’s World Cup celebrations has terminated Vilda’s contract, as sources monitored by THEWILL revealed.
The scandal involving Rubiales has rapidly become a heated national debate over women’s rights and sexist conduct. Vilda, seen as a Rubiales loyalist, had faced criticism since last year when 15 players revolted, citing inadequate coaching methods and demanding parity with the men’s squad. Some of those players were then excluded from the team.
According to journalist Danae Boronat, players accused Vilda of excessive control, like dictating to veteran players what to say in interviews. Furthermore, Vilda and men’s coach Luis de la Fuente initially applauded Rubiales’ refusal to resign but later condemned his behaviour.
