May 23, (THEWILL) – Spanish prosecutors have initiated an investigation into the racist chants directed at Real Madrid’s star forward, Vinicius Junior, during a recent match, while the President of the Football Federation acknowledged the presence of a deep-rooted racism problem in the country.
As THEWILL reported, the 22-year-old Brazilian international was subjected to racial abuse by a spectator at a game against Valencia, resulting in his subsequent red card for his reaction and the brawl that ensued. The prosecutor’s office in Valencia is treating the incident as a potential “hate crime,” as reported by a judicial source.
Real Madrid has taken action by filing a complaint with the office, urging a thorough investigation to hold the responsible parties accountable. The club also views the chants as constituting a hate crime. The Spanish Government’s sports council has also stepped in, reviewing footage to identify the individuals behind the offensive behaviour in order to propose appropriate sanctions. Past incidents have led to recommendations of a one-year ban from stadiums and a €4,000 fine for those found guilty.
Prominent figures from the football community and beyond have rallied around Vinicius Junior, who has repeatedly faced racial abuse in La Liga. Luis Rubiales, the President of Spain’s Football Federation, candidly acknowledged the country’s deep-seated racism issue, stating, “As long as there is just one fan, a single undesirable or group of undesirables, who hurl insults over someone’s sexual orientation, or skin colour, we have a serious problem.”
During the match, Vinicius bravely identified the alleged perpetrator to stadium officials, leading to a temporary pause in play and an appeal to halt racist insults.
