April 22, (THEWILL) – Nigeria’s Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Enoh, has commended the nation’s boxing success at the recent African Games and praised initiatives aimed at nurturing amateur talent in the sport.
In a statement, the Minister highlighted boxing’s contributions, which yielded eight gold medals and two silver medals out of 11 representations made by Nigeria at the continental event.
“Boxing has brought glory to our nation over time and remains one of our strengths,” the Minister stated, underscoring the discipline’s historical significance for Nigerian sports. The Minister’s remarks came after being honoured with the YUCATECO Boxing Achievement Merit Award by the YUCATECO Boxing League.
The Sports Minister extended gratitude to Omenlei Yakubu Imadu, CEO of the YUCATECO Boxing League, for his dedicated efforts in developing amateur boxing in Nigeria. Imadu’s well-planned programmes have provided a platform for aspiring boxers while creating employment opportunities for coaches and technical personnel involved in the sport.
“Not only has he incentivised boxing at that level, but he has also dedicated his time and resources to implementing well-planned programmes that provide a platform for amateur boxers and create job opportunities for coaches and members of the technical crew,” Enoh said of Imadu’s initiatives.
As Nigeria looks to build on its boxing successes, the Sports Ministry remains focused on nurturing talent across all sports disciplines, underscoring the government’s commitment to athletic development nationwide.
