November 8, (THEWILL) – South African rugby icon, Duane Vermeulen, announced his retirement from professional rugby on Wednesday at the age of 37.
Vermeulen, who began his career with the Pumas before joining Western Province and the Bulls, earned 76 caps for the Springboks. The dynamic number 8 was instrumental in South Africa’s Rugby World Cup triumphs in 2019 and 2023.
Twice named South African Rugby Player of the Year, Vermeulen will be remembered as one of the greatest Springbok forwards. His powerful runs and rock-solid defence made him a key figure during the Springboks’ title runs.
“Duane will forever be regarded as one of the real hard men of South African rugby,” said SA Rugby President Mark Alexander. “As someone who preferred to operate away from the limelight, Duane was one of those players who never settled for second best.”
The second row turned to number 8 retires as the most capped Springbok number 8. He also lifted the Currie Cup with three different provincial sides. Vermeulen’s passion and commitment to the Springbok jersey will not be forgotten by adoring fans.
