January 07, (THEWILL) – After making contact with Wolverhampton Wanderers, Tottenham are preparing to make a £22 million move for Adama Traore, with Wanderers boss Bruno Lage apparently approving his departure.
The Spain international was one of Spurs’ primary transfer targets over the summer, but due to the £50 million asking price, no deal was ever completed.
Traore’s transfer fee has plummeted as he turned down a series of new contract offers from the Wanderers. There was talk of a new contract, but little progress was achieved, and Wolves are now willing to let him go.
Spurs are currently leading the queue of clubs as managing director Fabio Paratici leads talks between the two sides. Liverpool, Leeds, and West Ham are all being kept informed of the situation.
Traore’s reps have told Spurs that he is willing to play in Antonio Conte’s wing back system because he wants to play under the Italian and believes he would improve in north London.
Conte was also interested in Traore while he was at Chelsea, but the winger was still with Middlesbrough at the time. A move to Spurs could also help assist Traore consolidate a spot in Spain’s national team.
Wolves boss Lage stated, when questioned about possible departures from his side in this window: “When you want to do next step, every time you sell your best players, the next step never happens. But in the transfer window, you never know if something happens in last minute, you have to decide what is best for the club and the player.”
Matt Doherty and Joe Rodon, among others, have been mentioned as possible makeweights in the deal.
Wolves are presently solely interested in monetary offers, but this could change in the future. They also inquired about Wolves defender Max Kilman, who has performed admirably this season, but any such move would be in the future.
