December 10, (THEWILL) – Tottenham Hotspur defender, Cristian Romero, has publicly criticised the club’s board, attributing the team’s recent performance struggles to management decisions. Following a disappointing 4-3 defeat to Chelsea that left Tottenham in 11th place in the English Premier League, the Argentine international spoke candidly about the club’s ongoing challenges.
In a direct statement to Spanish broadcaster, Telemundo, Romero highlighted the contrast between Tottenham and other top EPL clubs. “Manchester City competes every year, you see how Liverpool strengthens its squad, Chelsea strengthens their squad, doesn’t do well, strengthens again, and now they’re seeing results. Those are the things to imitate,” he stated.
The defender pointed out a recurring pattern at the club, noting that he has played under five managers, including caretakers, since joining Spurs in 2021. Despite significant infrastructure investments, including a world-class stadium and training facility, the club has not won a trophy since 2008. Romero argued that the fundamental issues lie with the board’s management approach.
Tottenham’s summer transfer strategy has been a point of contention, with the club breaking their transfer record by signing Dominic Solanke for up to £65 million. However, most of the £125 million spent was allocated to teenage talents like Archie Gray, Wilson Odobert, and Lucas Bergvall, who have made limited first-team impacts.
