November 26, (THEWILL) – Tottenham Hotspur will need to improve their performance in the first Europa Conference League competition after a 2-1 loss with Slovenian champions NS Mura at the Ljudski vrt in Maribor, Slovenia.
At just 11 minutes into their fixture, Tomi Horvat scored a magnificent goal to put the hosts ahead. Later in the half, Tottenham’s woes were compounded when Ryan Sessegnon was sent off for a second bookable offence.
Tottenham manager Antonio Conte made four changes early in the second half, and with the pressure mounting, Harry Kane hoisted in the equaliser with 18 minutes remaining. Spurs believed they had escaped with a point until Amadej Marosa scored in stoppage time to give the hosts a shock victory.
The result means Conte’s team drops to third place in the group as a result. Tottenham will now meet Rennes on December 9 in the final encounter of Group G.
The result was exactly what the hosts deserved after their outstanding performance on the night. Conte, on the other hand, has a lot of work ahead of him. Spurs got off to a bad start, down by a goal and a man.
After the break, they improved noticeably, equalising through Kane, but there was still time for one more surprise, which the Slovenian side delivered at the very death to deservedly take all three points.
Spurs now face the possibility of an embarrassing group-stage exit from the Europa Conference League. In two weeks, they face group leaders Rennes, while Vitesse Arnhem, who are currently equal on points with Spurs, host NS Mura at home. At the Tottenham Stadium, it might be a nerve-wracking evening.
