November 21, (THEWILL) – Tottenham Hotspur came back to beat Leeds United 2-1 in Antonio Conte’s first home league game as manager, with goals from Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Sergio Reguilon in the second half.
There was nothing between the teams until just before halftime, when Marcelo Bielsa’s men took control. After some fantastic work from Jack Harrison, Dan James converted the winger’s tempting cross from the left.
In the second half, Spurs upped the ante and equalised when Hojbjerg steered the ball home from Lucas’ feed. With 20 minutes remaining, Reguilon completed the comeback by prodding home from close range after Eric Dier’s free kick rebounded off the post.
Leeds gave it their all in pursuit of an equaliser, but despite their best efforts, it eluded them. Spurs go up to seventh place, four points shy of the top four, while Bielsa’s side remains in 17th place, only two points above the relegation zone.
Spurs travel to Slovenian side NS Mura in the Europa Conference League on Thursday night. Leeds United will travel south again next Saturday, this time to Brighton & Hove Albion, for a tea-time kick-off.
Spurs could be on the verge of a turnaround under their dynamic new coach, as they face Burnley, Brentford, and Norwich City in their next three English Premier League matchups.
Leeds, meanwhile, will play Brighton and Crystal Palace in their next two games, and will be looking to rebound from their defeat in London with a win against two mid-table sides to climb up the table.
