September 30, (THEWILL) – Tottenham Hotspur pulled off another dramatic stoppage-time victory on Saturday evening, defeating Liverpool 2-1 thanks to an own goal by Joel Matip.
The exciting, resurgent sides had both started the English Premier League season undefeated after disappointing campaigns last year. Liverpool looked set to escape with a fantastic point after Cody Gakpo cancelled out Son Heung-min’s opener. But the visitors were down to nine men after seeing Curtis Jones and Diogo Jota sent off before halftime.
Spurs finally beat Liverpool at the fifth attempt in front of their home fans at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Just like two weeks ago against Sheffield United, a stunning finish in added time secured the three points.
It was Liverpool defender, Matip, who provided the decisive touch in the 96th minute, inadvertently turning Pedro Porro’s cross into his own net to spark wild celebrations. The last-gasp 2-1 victory will delight Spurs fans and continue their perfect start to the league season.
Liverpool will be disappointed to lose in such dramatic fashion despite being down to 10 men for much of the match and nine for 21 minutes. In their next game, they welcome Union SG in the UEFA Europa League while Spurs travel to Luton in the EPL.
