February 17, (THEWILL) – Tottenham Hotspur’s hopes of a top four finish this 2024 season were hampered after a 2-1 home defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday. A brace from Joao Gomes earned the visitors a deserved three points that lifts them up to 10th in the table.
Despite last weekend’s dramatic late win over Brighton and Hove Albion that saw Spurs briefly move into the UEFA Champions League places, they struggled to break down a resolute Wolves’ defence. Gomes’ opener on 42 minutes gave the away side a half time lead. Although Dejan Kulusevski levelled immediately after the break, Gomes struck again midway through the second half after a scintillating run from Pedro Neto.
The loss leaves Tottenham in fifth place, two points behind fourth placed Aston Villa. Manager Ange Postecoglou will be concerned by his side’s lack of attacking threat, especially with the race for European football heating up. The Australian will hope talismanic striker Son Heung-min can rediscover his best form quickly.
For manager Gary O’Neil, this was an excellent result against one of the Premier League’s in-form teams. His counter attacking approach worked perfectly, epitomised by Neto’s assist for Gomes’ winner.
Attention for both teams now turns a hectic run of fixtures before the end of the season. With only 13 games left, Spurs and Wolves know consistency will be key if they are to realise their ambitions over the coming weeks.
