August 21, (THEWILL) – In an enthralling La Liga encounter on Monday, Deportivo Alaves pulled off a remarkable second half comeback to shock Sevilla 4-3 at Estadio de Mendizorroza.
The home side displayed tremendous determination after going down 2-1 just before the break to hand the visitors their second consecutive defeat. Alavés took the lead early through Luis Rioja’s 7th minute strike. However, Sevilla equalised soon after courtesy an own goal before Erik Lamela’s volley put them ahead in the 41st minute. The first half ended 2-2 though after Ruben Duarte scored in a 44th minute corner for Alaves.
The hosts came out rejuvenated after the break and Kike García headed in from close range in the 54th minute to make it 3-2 following a cross from Duarte. García then added to his tally in the 59th minute to incredibly put Alaves 4-2 up. Sevilla tried mounting a late comeback but only managed a consolation Rafa Mir goal deep in stoppage time.
The remarkable victory ended Alaves’ seven match winless run against Sevilla across all competitions. While Alaves now have 3 points from 2 La Liga games, two-time defending Europa League winners Sevilla are still without a point after their opening two matches.
Alaves should take great confidence from this performance as they showed tremendous heart. Sevilla on the other hand face an uphill task to turn things around after a dreadful start to their La Liga campaign. They face Girona on Saturday while Alaves are away to Getafe on Monday.
