July 28, (THEWILL) – Luis Suarez has formally re-joined Uruguay’s Nacional, his boyhood club, and the first team of his decorated professional career.
As THEWILL reported, the 35-year-old confirmed on Tuesday that he has reached a deal to rejoin Nacional after leaving Atletico Madrid at the end of the previous season. Although the terms of the contract were not made public by the South American club, the transfer was finalised on Wednesday.
Suarez took to Twitter to show his pride at returning to where it all began and expressing gratitude for the support from their fans, writing: “I am proud to wear this shirt again. Thank you for all your support. See you soon!”
At the age of 18, Suarez made his professional debut for Nacional in 2005, and the season after that, he transferred to Groningen. Thereafter, he spent time with Ajax, Liverpool, Barcelona, and Atletico, where he amassed 32 goals in 67 league games over the course of two seasons, winning LaLiga in the first.
The all-time leading scorer for Uruguay, who is anticipated to compete in this year’s World Cup, will work to help Nacional win back the Primera Division championship that was won by Penarol last season.
