February 26, (THEWILL) – Everton has successfully appealed against the severity of a 10-point deduction imposed on them by the English Premier League in November 2022 for breaching profit and sustainability rules. An independent appeal board has now reduced the deduction to six points, meaning Everton move up to 15th place in the EPL standings.
In a statement, Everton expressed satisfaction that their appeal has resulted in the points sanction being lowered. The club believes the original 10-point deduction was disproportionate compared to penalties for similar financial breaches in the English Football League, and the nine-point deduction that applies for insolvency under EPL rules.
Significantly, the appeal board also overturned the initial panel’s finding that Everton did not act in “utmost good faith”. The club feels vindicated in pursuing the appeal on this point of principle.
While pleased with the appeal outcome, Everton says they remain fully committed to cooperating with the EPL regarding ongoing proceedings for the 2022/2023 financial year. The club will make no further comment at this stage.
Everton thanked their supporters, particularly fan groups like the Fan Advisory Board, for their patience and continued backing throughout the process. The club is still assessing the full implications of the appeal board’s decision.
