The Akure-based outfit dazzled in the captivating encounter, triumphing over Lobi Stars with a 3-1 scoreline at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena on Sunday. In their final game of the Playoffs, Sunshine clinched their sole triumph in the competition, courtesy of a remarkable first-half display.
The Owena Whales dominated the proceedings from the outset, displaying their determination to get a result in the first match of the day. It took them only 23 minutes to break the deadlock, as Stephen Chukwude’s header from a free kick propelled them to a 1-0 lead. Building on their advantage, Michael Olulasi doubled Sunshine’s tally six minutes before half-time.
However, Lobi Stars managed to reduce the deficit in the second half through Elijah Ani’s goal, serving as their solitary consolation in the competition. Sunshine Stars remained resolute, and with just eight minutes remaining on the clock, Vincent Temitope sealed the match with a third goal, restoring their two-goal cushion.
Following their third defeat in the Playoffs, Lobi Stars swapped positions with Sunshine, sliding to the bottom of the table. Meanwhile, the Akure Gunners ascended to fourth place, accumulating five points out of a possible 15.
