July 16, (THEWILL) – Portuguese coach Jose Peseiro is currently engaged in negotiations with the Nigerian Football Federation regarding a potential contract extension, as confirmed by Augustine Eguavoen, the Federation’s technical director.
THEWILL recalls that Peseiro’s previous contract with the NFF expired on June 30, 2023. While discussing the matter, Eguavoen noted the need for adjustments to the previous agreement and encouraged Peseiro to demonstrate flexibility in order to continue as the coach of the Super Eagles. The former Real Madrid assistant manager took over as Nigeria’s head coach in May 2022, leading the team to a below-par outing at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
According to Eguavoen, the discussions are currently underway, and the NFF is putting forth its conditions while considering Peseiro’s requirements. Eguavoen remarked on the willingness of both parties to find a mutually acceptable resolution: “We are flexible, so it could be suitable for both sides and once we reach a common ground, why not?”
The NFF technical director further reaffirmed Peseiro’s position as the coach of the national team saying: “Contract or no contract, he is a human being and he is still the coach of the national team as it is.” This is in tune with the intention of the NFF to formally invite Peseiro once an agreement has been reached, with Eguavoen underscoring their commitment to finding common ground.
Eguavoen revealed that if contractual talks do not pan out accordingly, there will be no bad blood: “We want to reach a common ground, but if we can’t, we would also like to shake hands.” The NFF’s technical director acknowledged the importance of open communication and expressed optimism about finding a resolution that satisfies both parties involved.
