October 11, (THEWILL) — Nigeria’s Super Eagles faced an unexpected travel disruption on Friday when their chartered ValueJet aircraft was forced to turn back to Angola following a critical technical failure. The Bombardier CRJ 900 developed a substantial crack in the front windscreen approximately 15 minutes after departing Luanda, where the plane had stopped to refuel.
The pilot immediately initiated an emergency return to Quatro de Fevereiro International Airport, executing a safe landing with all passengers unharmed. The incident occurred as the team travelled from Polokwane to Uyo in Akwa Ibom State, where they are due to face Benin Republic on Monday. Aviation authorities determined that the windscreen damage resulted from structural stress rather than broader mechanical problems.
All passengers, including players, technical staff, and government officials, evacuated the plane without injury. Currently, the Super Eagles remain stranded at the Angolan airport whilst awaiting replacement transport. The Nigeria Football Federation is reportedly working closely with domestic aviation authorities to arrange an alternative aircraft from Nigeria to transport the travelling party. Officials have emphasised the need for swift action to minimise disruption to the team’s preparation schedule ahead of the crucial home fixture.
The travel complications follow Nigeria’s 2-1 victory over Lesotho, a result that kept their dreams of qualifying for the World Cup faintly alive. The match against Benin Republic at Godswill Akpabio International Stadium remains scheduled for Tuesday, with the outcome holding significant implications for Nigeria’s campaign to reach the 2026 tournament.
The Nigerian delegation is expected to depart Angola once the substitute plane arrives from Nigeria, though no confirmed departure time has been announced.
