March 24, (THEWILL) – Nigeria’s senior men’s national football team, the Super Eagles, have left Abuja for Ghana, where they will play the Black Stars in a decisive first leg Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup playoff fixture.
The coaching staff and players invited for the encounter boarded an Air Peace plane at the Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport this morning and could be seen cheerfully getting on board in a video shared by the Nigeria Football Federation via their Twitter account.
On Friday, the playoff tie will add another chapter to a long-running West African football rivalry that dates back to 1950. Ghana has won 22 of its 56 meetings against Nigeria, while Nigeria has only managed 17 victories. The remaining 17 have ended in draws.
The last time these two nations met in World Cup Qualifiers, in 2001, they played to a 0-0 tie in Ghana. The 40,000-seater Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi will be the stage for the latest battle of these two football nations before they meet at the Moshood Abiola Stadium in Abuja for the reverse fixture.
As THEWILL reported, Ghana invited 27 players for the double-header, and in the build-up to the games. Kickoff is at 8:30 pm local time
