January 07, (THEWILL) — Nigeria’s Super Eagles have refused to travel to Marrakech or attend training sessions ahead of their Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final against Algeria unless the Nigeria Football Federation settles outstanding winning bonuses. The squad, currently in Fez, Morocco, has declared it will not proceed with preparations for Saturday’s fixture until payments are made.
The dispute centres on unpaid bonuses from four matches during the tournament: victories over Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda, and Mozambique. Reports indicate each player is owed $30,000 for the three group-stage wins and a further $12,500 for the round-of-16 triumph. Additionally, the federation promised goal bonuses totalling $80,000 for the team’s 12 strikes so far, with $5,000 per goal in the group phase and $10,000 in the knockout rounds.
Although the Nigerian government recently released ₦3 billion to support the national team’s campaign according to reports, the funds have not been distributed to players or staff. Head coach, Eric Chelle, has reportedly received his salary arrears, but the squad remains without the promised payments.
This is not the first time financial grievances have disrupted the team’s preparations. In November 2025, the Super Eagles boycotted a training session in Morocco over similar unresolved payment issues. These recurring financial disputes raise concerns about the federation’s ability to manage player entitlements during major tournaments.
The quarter-final is scheduled for 5pm on Saturday, at the Stade de Marrakech. If the matter is not resolved by Thursday, Nigeria’s participation in the match could be in jeopardy, threatening their bid for a fourth continental title in their 18th quarter-final appearance.
