July 13, (THEWILL) – The US Women’s National Team will begin its fall schedule with two captivating ties against the most successful team in Africa, the Super Falcons of Nigeria.
The first match will take place on September 3 at Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City, Kansas, and the second will take place on September 6 at Audi Field in Washington, D.C. in what will be the first domestic games of the USWNT following their successful 2023 World Cup bid.
Vlatko Andonovski, their manager, was pleased with the choice of playing Nigeria. He said: “I’m just excited to play two matches against Nigeria. They have some very talented players who will present a lot of different problems for us to solve on both sides of the ball.” The Super Falcons are by far the most successful women’s soccer team on the continent, having won 11 African championships and taken part in each of the eight FIFA Women’s World Cup competitions.
Nigeria is currently competing in the TotalEnergies 2022 African Women’s Cup of Nations, a 12-team competition that will send its top four finishers to the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. The Super Falcons are led by an American, longtime college coach Randy Waldrum. On July 14, they will face Cameroon in Casablanca, Morocco, for a spot in the AWCON quarter-finals.
On July 7, during its second group stage match at the CONCACAF W Championship, the United States qualified for its ninth consecutive World Cup, becoming the 12th team and the first country from Concacaf to qualify for Australia and New Zealand.
