October 15, (THEWILL) – The Manchester United Supporters’ Trust (MUST) has called for clarity regarding the club’s proposed takeover. This comes after Sheikh Jassim withdrew his bid to buy the club, with rival Sir Jim Ratcliffe reportedly looking to acquire a 25% stake instead.
In a statement, MUST said it would be “wildly optimistic” to think the current owners, the Glazer family, are acting solely in the interests of supporters. The group outlined 11 questions for the Glazers, asking what changes a new minority shareholder would bring. MUST said the outcome of any deal “must include new investment” and cannot just serve shareholder interests.
Furthermore, MUST urged all parties to put the club’s interests first, stating: “If the reports are true regarding INEOS obtaining a 25% stake in our club there are a number of questions around the transaction which need clarity.” Six United supporter groups, including MUST, also called for unity in any protests against the Glazers.
While fans have differing views on protests and dialogue, the groups said they share common goals of better ownership and investment. Working together with mutual respect for different approaches would serve the club best, their joint statement said.
